Project Planning - Leno Queens Curtains

Almost immediately after finishing the last project (that I still have to blog about!), which were a set of rugs for our apartment, we moved.

Making curtains feels like a great way to not only learn a new weave structure or two since it's essentially weaving yardage, but it also feels like a great way of making this space truly our own. I'm planning on starting with curtains for the living room/office area because we spend a lot of time in this room, and while I absolutely love looking out my windows and into those of my neighbors (in a curious way, not a creepy way - I'm not Rear Windowing this at all), I would also really like to feel like there's a smidgen more of a barrier between me and my neighbors.

Curtain planning
This is what the space those curtains are going to go into looks like.

This space gets a lot of natural light and I want that light to come through the curtains so I was looking for something sort of gauzy and ran into a picture on Instagram from tesiapark that really inspired me. I'd love to post the image here, but I don't seem to be able to embed it, so here's a link to the image: tesiapark image of leno weave

While I like the chevron structure, I would probably do something more like an alternate gauze, but in stripes. I'm thinking of a 3:1:.25 ratio of white to teal to silver. While thinking about this, I realized that if the weft is all one color, and the same thickness as the warp, then I'm going to need a bolder color for the teal stripes so that they end up being the right color. Thinking that through made me realize that I probably want a thinner weft yarn than the warp so that the warp yarn can really shine, especially the silver (which, I think is only available as a 10/2? I'm thinking of using this from Lunatic Fringe: Abigail Gimp Yarn in silver. So if the warp is a 10/2 and the weft needs to be thinner than that, am I looking at a 16/2 or 20/2 weight weft? I feel like that will take forever to weave the 3 panels of 8.5' curtains I'm going to need.

It sounds like what I really need to do is a bunch of sampling...so I guess I need to learn how to sample, and how to order yarn for sampling! On the upside, if I have to make a lot of warp changes, I'll at least get really good and hopefully quicker at dressing the loom!

For the guest room a NYGH member suggested a draft of huck lace curtains from Favorite Scandanavian Projects to Weave (which I would link to except that it's out of stock literally everywhere and as soon as its available again, which I think it will be, I want to be sure I can snag a copy!). Those will likely be a lot more straight forward to weave, but the curtains in the living room feel like they're a higher priority, so I'll wait on those until I have a chance to sample and weave curtains for the living room.

Stay tuned!
